UX Case Study — SmartKids App

Right when schools closed due to COVID, my friend & I created, designed, built and released an app! It’s called Smart Kids, and it’s a super user-friendly app used by parents and teachers to review student’s progress during the lockdown.

The key to the success of education is not only from the curriculum and infrastructure that is adequate but also from educators such as teachers and parents.

Problem Statement
The teacher educates at school, while parents certainly have an interest in knowing the development of their children in school. Adequate attention and motivation must also be given by parents so that children can be excellent in their school and later can achieve the dreams of the child. However, many parents only know the development of their children at school only when receiving a transcript report. Of course, because parents have their own activities, they don’t get enough information from the teacher or homeroom teacher at all times. This is where SmartKids comes in, as a digital technology product that provides new ways in the student learning process and the process of interacting between students and teachers and teachers with parents.

Expectation out of this exercise:
I have collaborated with a school in Chennai area that allows us to do research on the products that will be made. In order to avoid unclear allegations and preconceptions on the user, I met some parents of students at that school to disseminate the survey that had been prepared.

Parents of students already have an awareness of the importance of attention to children’s development in school, but do not know how to do it easily

Even if doing so, parents must contact the school administration or contact other students’ parents to check whether the activity that has been told by the child is correct

Parents only rely on high “trust” in their children to tell all activities in school, but there are still a small number of students who do not always tell all their activities to their parents.

Currently the school has not provided enough information about student development that is easily accessible or easily known by parents

Goal of the Project
Based on these problems, we realize that parents need a way to easily find out all their child’s development information. One way is through a digital platform. So that with the existence of this digital platform will allow parents to pay attention and monitor their child’s development easily anytime and anywhere. In order to be used by parents, the digital platform must be user friendly, understandable, and not intimidating.

Target Audience
Parents — Teachers — Students

User Interview
Two research methods contributed to my discovery: Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis.

Qualitative
I have conducted an interview with one working professional who has a son & daughter in primary school.
The main questions were as follows

Can you tell the experience about the last parent-teacher meeting?

How do you get to know about the development of your children’s from school administration?

Were you asked about your time availability of meeting from the school administration?

How often you will have check with your child’s teacher regarding his/her behaviour

Quantitative
Does the school keep you updated about the progress of my child?
Responses: 10

How do you get informed about your Children’s homework?
Responses: 7

Research Take away

The working parents are not sure of what is actually happening in the class

It is not easy to communicate with teachers when they have doubts about the assignment given

There is difficulty in tracking progress report and student’s work

Persona

Empathy Map

User Flow

Paper Prototype
The first step to help me outline the app, exploring ideas and flows. Only by taking markers and paper then draw all the features, requirements, and information that should be displayed on each page.

Wireframe

Usability Testing
Usability Testing is a technique used in UCD(user-centred design) process to evaluate a product by testing on real users. This is a practice which gives direct input on how real users use the product. So I have created an interactive prototype using Invision app and tested it
with five different users.

Why should I do usability testing?

- Measure users’ satisfaction with the interface
- Find out if users are able to use the interface and achieve their goals
- Discover the product’s possible weaknesses
- Discover what the users like the best about the app
- Receive useful feedback on how the product can be improved
- Implement the improvements and boost customer retention

Session & Task

The test was a success since I was able to get feedback that will be valuable for the next stages of design and was further induced in my wireframes.

High Fidelity Design

Thanks for watching.
